Spring break was approaching, and a family of five from Texas was eager to hit the slopes in Aspen. They’d flown private before—but always as guests of family friends. This time, they wanted to book their own flight. Questions swirled: Who do we call? How much will it cost? Are we paying too much? Is this even worth it?
Like many, they hit the internet, and their search led to overwhelming results: a wide range of aircraft types, prices that varied dramatically, and uncertainty about what was “right.” A stroke of fortune came after a round of golf when a long-time client of mine casually said, “You’re having trouble getting a plane to Aspen? Call my jet guy. I’ll text you his number.”
Later that day, my phone buzzed with a message: “Hi—we’re friends of [client’s name]. We’re looking to charter to Aspen and hoping you can help.”
I replied and politely asked if I could give them a call. After a friendly chat about our mutual connection, they walked me through what they needed: five seats, ski equipment, and luggage. I could hear the stress as they mentioned the quotes they’d received—some aircraft were too small to fit their gear, while others were far too large and cost-prohibitive.
“Room for five, baggage, and skis… will the nanny be joining you?” I asked.
They paused. “We hadn’t thought of that—is it extra?”
I smiled. “The beauty of a full charter is that the entire aircraft is yours. If the aircraft has six seats, you can bring the nanny along. No extra charge.”
They were surprised—and relieved.
“Would you like us to arrange car service to your accommodations in Aspen as well?” I offered.
“Wow, you guys handle everything!” they said.
I laughed. “Not quite, but we try.”
Pulling into the private terminal (FBO), the family stepped out, skis and gear in tow. No lines. No crowds. Just a short walk to their aircraft. The flight crew welcomed them with warm smiles, blankets on the seats, and coloring books for the youngest kids.
As the engines hummed to life, I sent a quick message, “Have a great flight! I’ll touch base with you in Aspen.”
Moments later, my phone rang. The family appeared on screen, smiling and waving from their seats.
When I checked in a few days later, I asked how everything had gone. Their response was simple: “I think we’re going to have to do this more often.”
I smiled and replied, “Where are we going next?”
